About Walt Kelly
After working as a Disney animator, Walt Kelly struck out on his own and Pogo first appeared in a 1941 Dell comic. By the late 40's Kelly had transformed Pogo into a newspaper strip. The first of 45 books, simply titled Pogo, was released in 1951. This was quickly followed by I Go Pogo, Uncle Pogo's So-So Stories, The Pogo Papers, and The Pogo Stepmother Goose.
Walt Kelly (1913-1973) is one of the most respected and innovative American cartoonists of the twentieth century. His long-running Pogo newspaper strip has been cited by modern comics artists and scholars as one of the best ever. Other cartoonists such as Jeff Smith (Bone), and Frank Cho (Liberty Meadows) have all cited Kelly as a major influence on their work. Alongside Uncle Scrooge's Carl Barks and Krazy Kat's George Herriman, Kelly is recognized as a genius of "funny animal" comics.
This is a set of 6 plastic mugs and 6 plastic figurines that were promotional items back about 1969 from Procter & Gamble products.
I am the third owner. The original owner collected them directly from the promotion and added them to their personal collection in 1969. All the figures and mugs are in great shape. Mugs were never used, and figurines are still brightly colored, as they were not played with, just set in a display case.
