New Burn's source is located within Heddon-on-the-Wall, Northumberland, where it is known as the Dewley Burn, before it flows south and then east. It flows near Throckley, to which is where it crosses the Tyne and Wear-Northumberland border and becomes known as the New Burn, and heads south into the area of the same name, Newburn-upon-Tyne, and flows into the Tyne at its mouth.
