Etymology: Named for the Roman fort built at Chester-le-Street, Concangis, which is a shared root for the town itself, with ceaster later meaning roman fortification in Old English. [3][4][5]

The Chester Burn appears at Holmside Lane in Holmside where it is known as Wardle's Burn, and continues through Holmside until it is renamed the Cong Burn, and continues for roughly 2 miles til it passes by Waldridge Fell Country Park and its tributary, Little Burn, flows into the Cong Burn. It continues on through Pelton Fell, where the Twizell Burn flows into the Cong Burn, and along to Chester-le-Street by the B6313 where the stream is often named the Chester Burn. At the Chester Burn Viaduct, it culverts under the Town Centre of Chester-le-Street and re-merges at its mouth where it flows into the River Wear at Riverside Park.
