The River rises at Kielderhead National Nature Reserve, where it is first called the White Kielder Burn. Its course flows southwest until it meets with the Scaup Burn, which is where it is called the Kielder Burn. It continues southwest, with another tributary Ridge End Burn flowing into Kielder Burn. The river then flows through Kielder, and the River North Tyne spouts out from the Kielder Burn northward, meanwhile the Kielder Burn heads southward and flows into Bakethin Reservoir, the northern connected part of Kielder Water, at its mouth.
