This document sets out what is expected of rowers and parents/carers. All school policies including behaviour and safeguarding apply to the RGS Boat Club. Failure to follow coach’s instructions, acting in an unsafe way or bad behaviour will not be tolerated and will be reported to the school for action.
The safety of rowers is our highest priority and it is important that the boat club that the rowers and parents are aware of the environment in which we row. The coaches follow our safety plan and further guidance in the form of a coaches handbook which together form an operating procedure. The coach’s decisions are final.
RGS Rowing: Code of Conduct
Behaviour
Rowers/Coxes, Parents/Carers and Coaches will show respect and consideration to everyone involved with rowing at our training base, other training locations and at events, remembering they we represent the RGS Boat Club and the wider school.
Rowers/Coxes will
follow the instructions given by the coach in charge of the session on or off the water.
abide by the safety policies of the club.
behave in a way to represent the club and the school in a positive way.
respect your coaches, fellow members of your squad, volunteers, staff, other rowing clubs, and other river users at all locations.
Training sessions and event
Rowers/Coxes will
With regards to attendance at training
attend the sessions they have been allocated.
using SPOND, they or their parents will notify the club in good time if they are not available.
when there is a last-minute change in availability inform the club manager via SPOND, email or WhatsApp as appropriate for the timescale.
With regards to events
indicate early if they can or cannot compete for their school using SPOND.

With regards to the training sessions and events
keep to agreed timings for training / competitions or inform your Coach if you are going to be late.
check the boat before each outing - heel restraints, Velcro & release mechanisms on shoes, tightness of stretcher and rigger bolts, etc.
wear a lifejacket if coxing, on launch, if a swim test was not past or if instructed by your coach.
not boat without a coach present.
not leave the pontoon until instructed by their coach.
not leave training sessions or event before speaking to the coach in charge of the session.
not leave a session without ensuring all equipment has been returned (wiped down) to the racks or the shed.
wear suitable kit for training and racing which must be appropriate for the conditions.
bring a change of clothes and a towel to each session.
bring suitable food and water to each session.
At our training base
Rowers/Coxes and parents/carers will
keep to the areas designated to rowers.
put litter in bins, empty bins and help with litter picking from our area when requested.
be suitably dressed, All-in-Ones should not be rolled down.
Equipment
Rowers/Coxes will
show respect for Club equipment at all times and report any damage promptly to your coach
only use boats/blades specified by the coach for use by your age group
not use a private boat without permission of the owner
Conditions of Membership for Parents/Carers
I consent to my son taking part in rowing at RGS and will support the RGS Boat Club, ensuring my son observes the RGS Rowing Code of Conduct
I understand that the standard of behaviour expected from my son and parents/carers as described in the code of conduct
As a Parent or Carer, I will also abide by the School “RGS Sport Code of Conduct for Parents, Carers and Supporters”. This Code of Conduct is available on this site.
I will ensure any change of circumstances concerning my child’s participation will be communicated to the club as soon as possible.
I understand that during rowing training and participation in events all must abide by British Rowing Row Safe and RGS Rowing Safety Policy.

I will ensure that my son has an up to date British Rowing Card at Junior - Race Level all times.
As an individually registered member of British Rowing, this provides the benefit of Combined Liability and Personal Accident cover to protect you whilst participating in rowing.

If a parent/carer cannot be contacted urgently, I consent to my son receiving medication as required and any emergency medical, dental or surgical treatment, including anaesthetic or blood transfusion, as considered necessary by the medical authorities present.
I understand that additional fees e.g. race fees, entries into national trials, costs of training camps, transport to training via a school minibus or commercial taxi, will be an additional cost that is not covered in the donation to the club. These will be reimbursed promptly.
I understand that if my son is selected for national trials, training camps or events where the rower competes as GB and not for the club; the club will do all it can to support the rower by free-ing their coach to attend:
But that if the additional costs are incurred by the club, parents may be approached to cover some or all of the expenses, if they do not directly benefit the whole club.
It should be noted that there will be a need for boat transport to these events and although the club will do all it can to support e.g. by arranging transport on trailers from other clubs going to the trial/event or by loaning the club trailer to the rowers taking part (assuming it is not already booked), however the club cannot guarantee a solution and the rower’s parents/carers should have a back-up plan to get their rower and their equipment to/from this event/trial/competition.
Transport
I consent to my son being transported by school minibus, commercial taxi or with agreement between the parents a private car, driven by parent/carer volunteers from the RGS Boat Club
I understand that the rower is late for weekday transport to training, the transport will not wait.
I am responsible for my son’s transport back from training; transport to RGS after the training will be made available if possible but is not guaranteed.
I understand that on some occasions training may be curtailed or the location altered, and a parent will be available via WhatsApp or phone in order to arrange transport.
I understand that at weekends I am responsible for my son’s arrival for training or at competitions.
Communication
I consent to my mobile number being shared with parent/carer volunteers transporting boys to and from training, for means of transport according to my instructions in the membership forms.
I consent to receive e-mails in relation to the RGS Boat Club.
Media
I am happy for photographs and videos to be taken at training and events and used purely for informational and educational purposes within the RGS community.
If I wish to refuse consent for photographs and videos to be used for external publicity purposes, then I will notify the club manager in writing.
Additional Consent
I consent for photographs or videos to be taken at competitive events, during training sessions and rowing club social activities and used for public relations purposes in the newspapers and other media. This may include naming of my son in these publications. I understand this permission will not expire when my son leaves the club.
- I consent to my details being kept on record in order for the club to keep in touch after my son has stopped rowing or left the school, so I can continue to hear about RGS Rowing unless I notify the Club Manager.
