Taking all of those Studio Arts classes sparked my passion to get into the gaming industry. This time around, I wanted to get into the Preproduction/concept/story boarding side of the industry instead of coding/programming. Because of this, while Massive Melee and "Random Rumble" sat on the back burner, getting new updates and revisions form time to time, I brainstormed a myriad of ideas, with many other people with shared interests.
This self portrait of me was supposed to serve as a profile picture of an Instagram art profile I had started. Funny enough, it was a precursor to this digital archive; after some inactivity, I had started uploading all of my old artworks going back to middle school. The profile has been since deleted though.
My hair doesn't even go in that direction.
Several of these new "franchises" include:
"War Island vs Elementals"
The initial idea was that the character concepts my friends and I created in middle school could be repurposed into another type of "franchise" or story, of two feuding groups. The initial roster composed completely of characters from the 2009-2011 era, before going through multiple changes. The "finalized" roster is shown below, having only drawn out the head portraits. In October 2019, I planned to use Inktober as an opportunity to draw all of the characters in this project, but burnout quickly set in as it was essentially "draw an OC a day" and it just wasn't in me to take on such an arduous task. I only made it to day 3, as shown to the right.
Synopsis:
Denizens of War Island are now at peace just after a centuries of fighting, reducing numbers of the continent to hundreds of thousands, for the sake of survival. Peace is fragile; however, rebuilding is slow, but assured. Weeks later, they are invaded by elemental warriors led by Samson, a being of untold power. Under his command, his band of warriors slaughtered hundreds of civilians and warriors. Generals of many War Island tribes and clans call for parlay with Samson, who wound up killing all but one, Karah, blinding her in one eye. Samson taunts that he will gather his best warriors and Karah should do the same. Given a week, Karah must assemble those willing to fight for War Island.
"Crackhead Vs Godzilla"
My friend Noland and I watched Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and we joked about a crackhead being able to take on Godzilla easily in a physical fight. This would later morph into "The Crackhead", a being of unknown origin with god-level abilities, taking on all other notable kaiju and other large monsters of our creation. We wanted to explore social themes at the same time. Just as we were then, the whole idea and concept still remains half-baked.
The Misadventures of Flare & Star Man
This proposed concept is inspired by my brother's artwork, another talented and awesome artist (You'll see more of his old work in his dedicated "Rogine's Archive" page). I wanted to create a world based around his artwork. He also drew one of my character's Star Man in his style and I've decided to adopt this design as his "official" one. I've brainstormed the cast and overall aesthetic as combining aspects of professional wrestling and Adventure Time, filling the world with over-the-top characters in a colorful world.
During a low moment in my life, I had these characters noodling around in my head and some time 2-3 in the morning, I quickly sketched them out before fully realizing their designs. I would enter mental lows I call "ruts" and I'd use them as my own personal therapist. Stanley is meant to be the tough voice, Bolton is reassuring and understanding, and Osmond is Osmond. They served as my own diary of sorts, where I'd use them to voice my troubles and force myself to pull myself out.
Miscellaneous Sketches
Pokemon-related drawings
I started this piece some time in 2017 and, because of laziness, it took me 2 long years to finish this piece, having finished some time in August 2019. One night/morning, I wasn't able to sleep, so at 2AM, I set up the unfinished picture, laid out my materials, and finished this piece once and for all. Inspired by the vs Capcom series' official artwork that depicted an iteration's roster in a group picture. Using Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter official artwork as a reference and with permission from my friends, I added in select friends into the artwork; some of whom recreate poses in the official artwork and some unique for the drawing.
The reason behind his creation is from the Michael Cera's Mustache group picture (which itself is inspired by Battle Royale's poster), and I wanted to do another group picture with people outside of the group (though by the time I started this, I had already left). Shout out to Tray W, Chris J, Joe M, Elias B, Kite B, Estella S, D'Andre T, Olivia R, Maggie F, Bethany G, Serena R, Jennifer V, Jay W, Noland, Connor W, Daniela R, Luis R, and Rebecca C and her boyfriend for lending me their likeness.
In late September 2019, I wanted to pay tribute to the days of Massive Melee. Since it never got off the ground and over the years, cut characters that wouldn't see the light, I wanted to do what was originally intended and put every character on the same page in the final clash between the Forces of Light and Darkness. I didn't think the composition all the way through, as this was a quick passion project, rushing to get this done. However, I've thought about redoing this artwork, hopefully down the lines it happens.
Starting January 21st, 2018, I have kept track of any dreams I remember as best as I can after waking up by writing out as many details as possible. Inspired by this someone who visualized someone else's (or their own, I'm not sure) dreams and capturing how abstract they can be, I wanted to create short comics of my own dreams as well. So far I have only done one, as much of my other dreams I have written down are far too long for me at my current state of mind to tackle.
I met an author named Darby S in high school, probably around 2014-2015. By then, he'd already been a published author and gathered a notable following. In the years following, he's worked on a two stories I have some involvement in to some extent: The Keymaster & Gerald.
The Keymaster was originally meant to be a comic before Darby began writing it in a horror novel format. Around 2017, I volunteered to be the illustrator. Darby and I shared a liking to Junji Ito's manga, serving as inspiration; for me specifically, it was the visuals. I wanted to recreate the sense of suspense and horror that Ito put in every panel, though of course I could never recreate his intense and horrific art style. I had drawn nine panels in a 3x3 grid-like format, and while Darby was impressed and looked to the future of the illustration, the format didn't grow on me, so I wanted to start over. Some stagnation, laziness, and a lack of discipline later, and aside from an unfinished character sheet and some other bits and pieces, I have next to nothing to show in bringing visual life to The Keymaster.
Gerald began as a webcomic written and illustrated by Darby himself. He said himself that he was no visual artist and from what I remember, drawn completely on his own phone. I took a like to the webcomic and despite my lack of work for The Keymaster, I asked if I could redraw the webcomic, in the same vein that Yusuke Murata drew the manga for ONE's One Punch Man webcomic. I wanted to use this an opportunity to work on composition and paneling after my failure of The Keymaster's beginning visuals. Gerald was intended to be drawn with a much simpler style that I instantly fell in love with, and I wanted to retain the art style of the characters, yet have them placed in a much more realistic world setting. I initially began redrawing each panel of Gerald before scrapping what work I had done since I noticed I hadn't changed anything in terms of the panels' compositions. I opted to begin anew and, with Darby's input, drew the main characters (so far) fully realized as I had done in middle school with my stick figure characters into actual people, in an attempt to insert flashback scenes of sorts to help the narrative just a bit. So far, I only have the one character sheet of the main characters fully realized, and sketches of the first few panels of Gerald fitting on one giant sized paper.
