High School
High School
I lacked the discipline and ambitions I once had and grew increasingly lazy, but also discouraged from continuing my craft. This lead to a bunch of stagnation and overall weak artwork, most of the which I had discarded since then. I did, however, wound up creating another proposed "franchise" that would take place within the same universe as Massive Melee, with its own diverse cast of characters.
Freshman year of high school was the first time I had ever taken an actual art class. I was put into Drawing & Painting and Digital Art & Imaging. Unfortunately, all work from the Digital Art & Imaging class is gone forever because I did not own/afford a USB. I was taught Adobe Illustrator, where I remember creating a business card for a made-up business (practicing graphic design), a room, and a self portrait during Fall Semester. I was taught Adobe Photoshop in Spring, with projects ranging from a movie poster to practice composition (mine was poorly done), an image to represent a song of our choice (M.A.D. by Hadouken!), and using some tool to convert a photograph into painting (a landscape of the Easter Island statues). I still managed to hang onto projects down in my Drawing & Painting class, fortunately.
In the watercolor painting, while I was sketching the scene in front of me, another student had walked by and complimented the work in progress. He then if he could be included and I said yes. I asked him to just stare ahead and he was cool with it. Never got his name.
I wouldn't take another art-related class until senior year. Unfortunately, a good portion of projects done in this class are also long gone, especially things done in Adobe Flash, simply because I didn't own a USB drive. I bypassed that obstacle by having to save my work into an online folder on the school's website, but never did it occur to me to save that work somewhere else online. I didn't even own a Gmail account until some time before graduation, but it was already too late. We also had a flipbook assignment made for this class that I would have dedicated time to create some sort of animatic for using Adobe Photoshop, but the flipbook is also lost to time. Luckily, I still have the storyboards for a short animation meant for the final project for this class.
I drew pieces for my other classes, regardless of the subject, for several projects that would require it. Most of them were done for my Japanese language classes.
My own creative ambition dissipated, but I would draw when directly inspired by others.
In the 9th grade during my Drawing & Painting class, I had this idea of an arena-style fighting game like Power Stone, Urban Reign, and Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style. I didn't figure out an exact storyline outside of characters of all backgrounds coming together to compete in a tournament setting for a cash prize/achieve personal goals. The general aesthetic of "Random Rumble" is meant to be more fun and goofy compared to the seriousness and grittiness of Massive Melee.
Brainstorming Characters
I threw up all character ideas I had in my head as contenders for "Random Rumble" and even recycled characters from Massive Melee. I planned to have both franchises take place within the same universe, with Random Rumble taking place after Massive Melee chronologically.
The Cutting Room Floor
I use head portaits as character select screens typically do to show who's "confirmed" playable and flesh out designs from simply being short descriptions. They also included possible "DLC" or if anything, other possible members for the roster, before a bulk of them were completely cut and replaced, as well reduced the total number so I can focus better. Quality over quantity as many put it.
"Finalized Roster" for "Random Rumble"
I did not get to fully realize every character "confirmed" for Random Rumble for either initial and finalized rosters, as you clearly see. The first two images on the left carousel are character poses that would pop-up on the character select screen on a stylized LCD panel behind the character when they're chosen, each meant to highlight or show some of their personality. I have not made those mocks-ups.
In March 2014, I joined a Facebook group named Michael Cera's Mustache, created by a page of the same name. I met some pretty neat people here, some of which I remain in contact with today. Talk about same face syndrome. Memes then are much different from memes now. Little did we know that humor now would be randomly generated. I no longer own the physical copy.
