To promote safety during the pandemic, most transit systems encourage the use of passes and Clipper Cards. In most cases, if you pay cash for your fare, you must pay the exact amount.
It is likely that you will qualify for discounted transit rates. See below for programs for which you might qualify.
Important note: the stimulus payments authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act do not count as income in eligibility calculations for discount programs.
Clipper Cards are cards that you load with amounts of your choosing. You can use them to pay fares on public transit all across the Bay Area. See below for information about discounted Clipper Cards and other discount programs.
If you are an adult between the ages of 19 and 64, you may be eligible for a Clipper Start Card that automatically discounts most of your trips on Bay Area Public Transit. Some Bay Area systems will discount your fares by 50 percent; others will discount your fares by 20 percent. To be eligible for a Clipper Start Card, your income must not exceed more than 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Line. For a single adult, that threshold is $25,760 per year. You will not qualify for the Clipper Start Card if you are eligible for other discounts--for example, the student discount or the discount for those with disabilities. College students from any college or university with a current and valid student ID (with picture) ride free on Sonoma County transit. For Petaluma Transit and Santa Rosa City Bus, Santa Rosa Junior College students ride free.

If you have a disabling condition you will likely be eligible for a Regional Transportation Connection Clipper Card. These are also known as RTC Cards. On most modes of transit, an RTC card gives you a 50 percent fare discount.

If you don't want to get a card, Sonoma County Transit, Petaluma Transit and Santa Rosa Transit provide a 50 percent fare discount when you board with photo I.D. with proof of age.

U.S. Veterans ride free on Sonoma County Transit. You will need to show one of the following: Veterans Administration (VA) identification card, Sonoma County Veterans identification card or a California Driver’s License with Veterans designation.
