If you have served in the military and are without a home, you may be eligible for assistance with permanent housing and supportive services.
Please do not assume that a less than honorable discharge will prevent from accessing services. For more information on veterans' issues, please visit our benefits page.
In 1972, a group of Vietnam veterans in Santa Rosa started a nonprofit, now called Nations Finest (formerly Veterans Resource Center), to provide services and a sense of community to fellow veterans who had returned home from the Vietnam War. They started small, relying on volunteers and an annual budget of $9,000. With 15 chapters in three states, today the organization offers a range of services to veterans from all eras. Housing assistance is part of many of the agency's services, including:
Homelessness prevention
Case management and other services to help you locate and keep housing
Temporary financial assistance for housing-related costs (e.g., rent, utility and security deposits, moving costs, etc.)
Transitional housing
Permanent supportive housing

The Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program (HUD-VASH) provides housing vouchers and supportive services to veterans who are chronically homeless—that is, veterans who have been without a home for a long time and who have a disabling condition.
You can learn more by contacting Brooke Prince-Slocum, a social worker with Healthcare for Homeless Veterans. Her phone number is 415.910.1056. Brooke can also provide information about other VA housing opportunities, including home ownership.
COTS is partnering with the VA to serve homeless veterans and help them find permanent affordable housing. If you are a homeless veteran who qualifies for VA health care, you may be eligible for the Health Care for Homeless Veterans program. Please check in with your care manager.
