Galle'rie - Gall'ery

Note
Note
Visual collection of galls: Gall'ery.
What? A gall? It typically starts with an insect (or arachnids or...) injecting its eggs in the tissue of a plant (petiole, stem, leaf, bud, etc. depending of the species of the insect) initiating a chemical reaction that results in the outgrowth of tissue which becomes the gall, a nursery chamber for the eggs and, later for larvae, a storage room of food. Larvae will then eat their way out.
Remember that gall formers are specialized. The lay their eggs in only one or few species. For exemple, the oak rough bulletgall wasp (which I just call Disholcaspis quercusmamma) selects 4 species of oaks, ignoring the other species of oaks and other plants. The Canada thistle stem gall fly (Urophora cardui, as we all know) only selects a Canada thistle plant and won't consider any other options.
The present Gall'ery shows galls I found in Manitoba. You will find the name of insect and host in Latin as well as in French and English if the names exist in these languages. I did my best to post two pictures (shot with my cell phone camera) for each type of gall, showing their look at different times of the year. The gall formers are challenging - at least for me now - to identify and to capture; not many will be seen below, unfortunately. Note the alphabetical order almost used to present the galls in the Galle'ry.
My personal species is Errare humanum est. Therefore you may find errors in my identifications. My apologies; I will correct when you'll let me know. At least, I added two excellent resources that you can trust below each insect : iNaturalist, bilingual, and gallformers.org, in English. There are also a few links to YouTube videos. You will also see here other types of alterations of plants.
When I was born, I had no idea there were galls on Earth. Today (and certainly tomorrow), I am amazed by the process and results in the world of the galls. And more so, now learning that cells we may find in certain galls can not be found anywhere else in the universe. Galls deserve a look; enjoy the Gall'ery.
For great info, visit gallformers.org. Maintained by real experts.
I need to thank the iNaturalist community (and site and app) for the storage of the pictures presented here, and the members who are helping me with identifications, particularly @mileszhang, @megachile, @calconey and @friesen5000 - who should not be considered responsible for any mistake you may find.
