Management
One skill which scientists often lack is management. I have therefore made it my endeavor to improve my management and leadership skills.
CMI
I was given formal training during my Knowledge Transfer Partnership project with the University of Reading and BP.
I then had the option to apply for a Level 5 award with the Chartered Management Institute. I had to complete two units which required ~3,000 word essays for each. Unit 5001 (pages 19-26) was about Personal development as a manager and a leader. This entailed:
- Assessing skills and competencies agains defined role requirements and organizations objectives.
- Construct a personal development plan using SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound) goals.
- Resource planning.
- Support and promote staff welfare.
Unit 5012 (pages 97-101) was about Being a leader. This entailed:
- Legal, regulatory and ethical requirements on leadership demands.
- Leadership styles: authoritarian vs. staff self-direction.
- Management vs leadership.
- Establish a culture of professionalism, mutual trust, respect and support within the team.
- Feedback of leadership onto the organization direction.
- Enable team development and commitment.
PMI
I am a Project Management Professional (PMP) with the Project Management Institute.
I completed a course at Florida International University on Project management fundamentals hosted by Project Management International.
The course focussed on the training to become a PMP which uses the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK; see syllabus below).
In July 2017 I passed the PMI exam which required me to answer 200 multiple choice chosen randomly from the PMBOK (~600 pages) and be proficient in the five Process groups.
