When is Ramadan? When is Eid ul-Fitr? When is Eid al-Fitr? When is Eid ul-Fitri?

When is Eid al-Fitri?

When you see the new crescent of the Moon start the fast and when you again see the new crescent of the Moon end the fast.

1. When does Ramadan start according to the Quran?

(Comments are in brackets).

Quran 2:185 Verse 2:185 In the month of Ramadan the Quran was (first) revealed as guidance for humans with clear reasons for the guidance and with judgment (between right and wrong). So whoever of you witnesses the month (of Ramadan) then they should fast in it (between dawn and sunset), and whoever is sick or on a journey, then the prescribed number (of missed fasting days should be made up) from other days (later after the sickness or journey). Allah intends that things be easy for you and does not intend hardship for you, so that you complete the prescribed period (of fasting) and that you glorify Him (Allah) for He (Allah) guided you so that you may be thankful (to Him Allah).

Quran 2:189 Verse 2:189 They ask you (Prophet Muhammad) about (what are) the (first small crescent of the) new Moons. Say, these are signs to mark fixed periods of time for (the affairs of) humans and for the pilgrimage. …”

2. When does Ramadan start according to hadith (stories from humans)?

(Comments are in brackets).

Narrated by Abu Huraira that the Prophet or Abu-l-Qasim (Prophet Muhammad) said, "Start fasting on seeing the crescent (of the new Moon which indicates that the month of Ramadan has started), and give up fasting on seeing the crescent (of the next new Moon which indicates that the month of Shawwal has started), and if the sky is overcast (and you cannot see it on the night of the 29th day), complete thirty days of (the month of) Sha'ban (meaning the next night will be the first day of Ramadan. In Islam one day starts at sunset and ends at sunset)." (Book 31, Hadith 133 Sahih Bukhari).

2a..Islamic Day.

In Islam a day starts with the night.

Wednesday for example is from Tuesday 5pm (Maghrib prayer time, sunset) to Wednesday 5pm (Maghrib prayer time, sunset).

2b. Islamic Month.

Every month has 29 or 30 days depending on when the crescent of the new Moon is visually sighted with the human eye.

A new month starts when the crescent of the new Moon is visually sighted with the human eye.

If the new moon crescent is seen on the night of the 29th day then start the new month.

If the new moon crescent is not seen on the 29th day then on the next night which is the 30th day start the new month.

2c. The month of Ramadan.

The month after Sha'ban is Ramadan.

Ramadan is the month of fasting from dawn to sunset for 29 or 30 days depending on when the crescent of the new Moon is visually sighted with the human eye.

2d. Example showing how to find the start of a month like Ramadan using the Moon.

Why did Ramadan start on Thursday 17 May 2018 CE 1439 AH in many parts of the world?

A month has 29 or 30 days depending on when the crescent of the new Moon is visually sighted with the human eye.

No crescent of the new Moon was visible after sunset on 15 May 2018 CE 1430 AH Tuesday 5pm (Maghrib prayer time, sunset) which is called Wednesday in Islam because in Islam the day starts with the night meaning Wednesday is from Tuesday 5pm (sunset) to Wednesday 5pm (sunset).

If on the night of the 29th day the Moon cannot be seen then the new month of Ramadan will start on the next day which means the first day of Ramadan is Thursday 17 May 2018 CE 1439 AH meaning the first day of Ramadan is from Wednesday 5pm (sunset) to Thursday 5pm (sunset) in Sydney Australia.

2e. Shawwal (Shawaal, Shawwāl) is the next month after the month of Ramadan.

The new Moon crescent shows the end of Ramadan and the start of the first day of.Shawwal.

The first day of Shawwal (Shawaal, Shawwāl) is the first day of daytime eating celebrated as Eid ul-Fitr (Eid al-Fitr).

In Islam a day starts at sunset and ends at sunset

Narrated by Ibn 'Umar that the Prophet (Prophet Muhammad) said, "We are an illiterate nation; we neither write, nor know accounts (calculations). The month is like this and this, i.e. sometimes of 29 days and sometimes of thirty days." (Book 31, Hadith 137 Sahih Bukhari).

Narrated by Hudhayfah that the Prophet (Prophet Muhammad) said, “Do not fast (for Ramadan) before the coming of the month until you sight the Moon or complete the number (of thirty days if you did not see the first crescent of the new Moon on the 29th day of the month); then fast until you sight the Moon or complete the number (of thirty days if you did not see the Moon on the 29th day of the month).” (Book 13, Hadith 2319 Sahih Abudawud).

Narrated by Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin that (Prophet Muhammad) the messenger of God used to count the days in Sha'ban in a manner he did not count any other month (meaning he was very careful in counting the days of month of Sha’ban which is the month before the month of Ramadan); then he fasted when he sighted (the crescent of) the new Moon of (the month of) Ramadan; but if the weather was cloudy (on the 29 th day) he counted thirty days (meaning the next night will be the first day of Ramadan. In Islam a day starts at sunset and ends at sunset) and then fasted. (Book 13, Hadith 2318 Sahih Abudawud).

Narrated by Hudhayfah that the Prophet (Prophet Muhammad) said, “Do not fast (for Ramadan) before the coming of the month until you sight the Moon (on the night of the 29th day) or complete the number (of thirty days if the crescent of the moon was not seen on the night of the 29th day meaning the next night will be the first day of Ramadan. In Islam a day starts at sunset and ends at sunset); then fast until you sight the Moon or complete the number (of thirty days if the crescent of the moon was not seen on the night of the 29th day meaning the next night will be the first day of Ramadan).”  (Book 13, Hadith 2319 Sahih Abudawud)

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas that the Prophet (Prophet Muhammad) said, “Do not fast one day or two days just before Ramadan except in the case of a man who has been in the habit or observing a fast (on that day); and do not fast until you sight it (the first crescent of the new Moon of Ramadan). Then fast until you sight it (the first crescent of the new Moon which is the start of the month of Shawwal Shawaal Shawwāl at the end of the month of Ramadan). If a cloud appears on that day (the 29th day so that you cannot see the Moon crescent and no one else reported that they could see the Moon crescent) then complete the number thirty (days meaning the next night will be the first day of Ramadan) and then end the fasting (on the first day of Shawwal Shawaal Shawwāl), a month (usually) consists of twenty-nine days (unless the moon cannot be seen in which case the next day will be the start of the new month).” (Book 13, Hadith 2320  Sahih Abudawud).

Yahya related to me from Malik (who hear it from) from Thawr ibn Zayd ad-Dili (who hear it) from Abdullah ibn Abbas that (Prophet Muhammad) the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, once mentioned Ramadan and said, "Do not start the fast or break it until you see the (first crescent of the) new Moon. If the new Moon is obscured from you (on the night of the 29th day), then complete a full thirty days (for that month meaning the next day will be the start of the new month)." (Book 18, Hadith 18.1.3 Malik’s Muwatta).

3. When does Ramadan start according to the Islamic calendar?

1. The Islamic calendar used in Saudi Arabia in 2011 (1432 AH) called the Umm al-Qura calendar is not based on a sighting of the Moon (Qamar) which is needed to determine the start of the daytime fasting month of Ramadan and the end of the daytime fasting month of Ramadan.

2. When the fasting month of Ramadan ends at sunset, then starts the first day of the month of Shawwal (Shawaal, Shawwāl) which celebrates the return to daytime eating in a holiday known as Eid ul-Fitr (Eid al-Fitr).

3. Authorities in Saudi Arabia have sometimes changed the start of Ramadan by one day earlier than indicated in the Umm al-Qura calendar date or one day later than indicated in the Umm al-Qura calendar date depending on when the Moon was sighted.

The Islamic calendar like all calendars is a calculated estimate and has been modified over time using different calculation criteria.

For example in the year 1423 AH (2002) a modification was introduced to the Umm al-Qura calendar so that at the end of day 29 in the month, the next day is the first day of the new month if the new Moon geocentric conjunction (when the Sun and the new Moon are very close to each other in the sky) occurs before sunset at Mecca (Makkah) in Saudi Arabia and the Moon sets after the Sun has set at Mecca (Makkah) in Saudi Arabia.

4. When is the New Moon visible?

1. When the new born Moon (al-Qamar al-Mawlid) is born (when the new phase of the Moon starts) it is black so it cannot be seen with the unaided human eye from Earth.

2. One or more days after the new Moon is born the unaided human eye on Earth is able to see (sight) the first small crescent (Hilal) of the new Moon.

5. Why are there different starting dates for Ramadan?

1. Some Muslims start the first day of Ramadan at sunset as soon as the first report is received from their local area of a confirmed sighting of the small crescent of the new Moon soon after sunset or as soon as they see the small crescent of the new Moon soon after sunset as Prophet Muhammad did from wherever he was located.

2. Some Muslims start the first day of Ramadan by following the decision of Saudi Arabia but this would not be correct if the small crescent of the new Moon can be seen soon after sunset in your country before it can be seen in Saudi Arabia because you must not ignored your local Moon sighting.

3. Some Muslims start the first day of Ramadan by following the decision of other countries but this would not be correct if the small crescent of the new Moon can be seen soon after sunset in your country before it can be seen in other countries because you must not ignored your local Moon sighting.

4.  Some Muslims start the first day of Ramadan based on calculations and this is valid when it is combined with the visual sighting of the small crescent of the new Moon on day 29 in the month of Sha'ban or if it is cloudy soon after sunset on the 29th day and no other confirmed sightings of the small crescent of the new Moon are reported then add one more day meaning the next night will be the first day of Ramadan.

Comment 1. In some countries a month is 29 days if they see the Moon soon after sunset at the end of day 29 and in other countries where the Moon was not sighted one more day is added to make that same month to be 30 days.

Comment 2. The Islamic calendar is used worldwide for civil purposes and is not affected by the addition of one day in some countries because the Islamic calendar is fixed for international and civil use.

Comment 3. The addition of one day in a local area only applies to that local area for the start and end of fasting and the first day of the Eid (Id) festival and is used when the Moon could not be sighted and there was no other report of a Moon sighting from a similar geographic area.

Comment 4. The Islamic calendar is fixed for international and civil use but it is the sighting of the Moon in the local area that is used to determine the start and the end of fasting in Ramadan and the start of the Eid (Id) festival that ends the month of day time fasting in the month of Ramadan.

Comment 5. Dates given for Ramadan in Islamic calendars are fixed for civil use.

Comment 6. Dates given for the start and the end of fasting in Ramadan are an estimate because no one knows if clouds or other factors might make a calculated Moon sighting impossible to see.

Comment 7. Allah determines who shall see the crescent of the Moon on the 29th day and who shall see the crescent of the Moon on the next day 30. This is to remind humans that all things are determined by Allah.

5. Since the Earth has only one Moon some Muslims start the first day of Ramadan at sunset as soon as the first report is received from anywhere in the world of a confirmed sighting of the small crescent of the new Moon but this ignores date and time differences around the world that exist because the Earth is round and not flat. If the Earth was flat then this method would work because the date and times of Sunset and Sunrise and Moonset and Moonrise would be similar worldwide.

6. Some Muslims start the first day of Ramadan based on a combination of the above which is valid when it includes the sighting of the small crescent of the new Moon locally whenever that is possible.

7. Each person should follow the sighting of the first small crescent of the new Moon in the place where they are. This is what was done by Prophet Muhammad and it is the same as using your local time for determining your local prayer times.

Since the time of prayer, eating, fasting and sleeping is different everywhere in the world and is determined by local sunrise and local sunset times so to is the time of Ramadan also different in each part of the world and is determined by local Moon sighting times.

8. Prophet Muhammad and Ibn ‘Abbas followed local times to establish the beginning and the end of Ramadan.

The Hadith of Kurayb (I saw the crescent (of Ramadan) on Friday night while in Damascus (Syria).

I arrived at Medina (Arabia today in Saudi Arabia) at the end of the month and Ibn ‘Abbas asked me, “When did you see the crescent (of the new Moon)?”

I said, “We saw it on Friday night.”

He (Ibn ‘Abbas) said, “Did you see it yourself?”

I said, “Yes and the people saw it, and they and Mu‘awiya fasted.”

He (Ibn ‘Abbas) said, “But we saw the crescent on Saturday night. So we will not stop fasting until either we complete thirty (days) or we sight the crescent (that shows the start of the month of Shawwal).”

I said, “Is Mu‘awiya’s sighting and fasting not sufficient for us?”

He (Ibn ‘Abbas) said, “No, this is how (Prophet Muhammad) the Messenger of Allah ordered us.” (Related by Ahmad, al-Daraqutni and al-Bayhaqi).

9. Never argue in an unfriendly way about the correct starting and ending time for Ramadan and do not be disappointed with someone who observes a different starting and ending time for Ramadan because it is Allah who leads each person with the Quran to their understanding of what Allah requires.

Sincere worship of Allah is more important to Allah than human disagreements.

6. Mistaken sightings of the crescent (hilal) of the new Moon.

1. Mistaken sightings of the small crescent of the new Moon.

If calculations say that the hilal is not visible, then reported sights of the first crescent of the new Moon by a few people should be rejected as a mistaken sighting to reduce errors because the sighting of the first crescent (hilal) of the new Moon is acceptable evidence only if what is testified to is physically, logically and legally possible.

2. Mistaken calculations of the small crescent of the new Moon.

If calculations say that the hilal is not visible then those calculations could be rejected as mistaken if a large number of people report seeing the first crescent of the new Moon.

3. The rules of Allah concerning the Sun and the Moon in this world are fixed and do not change.

4.  The birth of the new Moon cannot be seen with the unaided naked eye.

The birth of the new Moon (Astronomical New Moon, Wiladatul-Qamar meaning Birth of Moon, al-Qamar al-Mawlid meaning Born Moon) is invisible on the Earth to the unaided human eye because there is not enough angular separation between the Moon and the Sun at sunset in other words the Moon and the Sun are very close to each other in the sky and the side of the Moon that faces the Earth receives little or no sunlight that the unaided human eye can see from the Earth. This happens every month for one day or more when the Moon cannot be seen by the unaided human eye.

5. The first small crescent (Hilal) of the new Moon is only visible to the naked eye on the Earth one or more days after the birth of the new Moon when there is a certain amount of angular separation between the Moon and the Sun soon after sunset.

6. One or more days after the birth of the new Moon (which cannot be seen by the unaided human eye on the Earth) the separation between the position of the Moon and the Sun in the sky increases and the first light that the human eye on Earth can see is the sunlight that illuminates a small side of the Moon in the shape of the first small crescent of the new Moon.

7. The first small crescent (Hilal) of the new Moon is visible to the unaided human eye on the Earth normally one day or more after the birth of the new born Moon called al-Qamar al-Mawlid which cannot be seen on Earth with the unaided human eye.

See The mistaken new Moon sighting report in 1432 AH (2011) http://moonsighting.com/1432rmd.html

7. Estimated worldwide dates for the start of Ramadan and the start of Eid ul-Fitr (Eid al-Fitr).

7.1 Worldwide you can use the estimated dates below to look for the crescent (hilal, hilāl) of the new Moon (Qamar) in your western horizon soon after sunset.

Never look at the Sun.

Looking at the Sun can cause eye damage and blindness.

7.2 How to confirm the starting date of Ramadan and Eid.

These estimated dates also allow you to know when to listen to your local Muslim radio station or Muslim TV station or Muslim internet website that can confirm that Ramadan or Eid has started in your area.

7.3 What is one day in Islam?

A day in Islam is 24 hours.

One day in Islam starts at sunset (6 pm) and ends the next sunset (6 pm).

7.4 When does the first day of Ramadan start?

The first day of Ramadan starts soon after sunset.

7.5 When does the first day of Ramadan fasting start?

The first day of fasting in Ramadan starts when the first light before sunrise is visible in the eastern horizon.

7.6 When does the first day of Ramadan fasting end?

The first day of fasting in Ramadan ends soon after the Sun has set in the western horizon.

This sunset is the start of the second day of the month of Ramadan and this pattern of nighttime eating and drinking and daytime fasting continues for 29 days or 30 days depending on when the Moon is sighted.

7.7 How do you count the days before the month of Ramadan?

1. Prophet Muhammad used to count the days in Sha'ban in a manner he did not count any other month meaning he was very careful in counting the days of the month of Sha’ban which is the month before the month of Ramadan.

2. Look for the first crescent after the birth of the new born Moon in the western horizon soon after sunset to establish the first day of Sha'ban (the month before Ramadan) and this will let you count to the end of 29 days when sunset shall be the first day of Ramadan in your area.

3. If at the end of 29 days it is cloudy and the Moon cannot be seen then add one more day and then start Ramadan.

7.8 Astronauts who celebrate Ramadan at the International Space Station (ISS) orbit the Earth 15.7 times every day and they see the Sunrise and Sunset and Moonrise and Moonset 15 times every day.

Allah knows the situation of humans who are travelling in Space and humans who have been on the Moon and humans who will be on Mars during Ramadan.

Allah understands that humans see the Moon rise and Moon set many times as they orbit the Earth in spacecraft.

Allah understands that humans standing on the Moon can see the Earth make a complete rotation over 24 hours if they are standing on the side of the Moon which always faces the Earth (the back side of the Moon never sees the Earth and the back side of the Moon cannot be seen from Earth).

Allah understands that humans standing on the side of the Moon which always faces towards the Earth always see the rotating Earth in one location in the black Moon sky.

The Moon sky is always black because the Moon has no atmosphere.

A person standing on the side of the Moon that always faces the Earth looking up at the Moon’s sky will see the Earth always located (sighted) in the same location in the black Moon sky.

However a person standing on the Earth looking up at the Earth’s sky sees the Moon moving from east to west across a blue sky for part of 12 hours in day-time and/or across a black sky for part of 12 hours at night-time on the Earth.

The Earth rotates every 24 hours so people standing on the Earth will see the Moon for 12 hours each day and/or night except for one day or more each month when during a new Moon the unaided human eye cannot see the small amount of light that is reflected by the side of the Moon that faces the Earth. At that time the back side (far side) of the Moon is in full sunlight.

The back side (far side) of the Moon was seen for the first time in 1379 AH (1959) when the Russia spacecraft Lunar 3 orbited the Moon and transmitted radio photos of the far side of the Moon.

The first humans to directly see the back of the Moon were the American crew of the Apollo 8 spacecraft who orbited around the Moon in 1388 AH (December 1968).

Seven months later America’s Apollo 11 spacecraft was sent to the Moon and they became the first humans to land on the Moon and to walk on the Moon in 1389 AH (20 July 1969).

The same side of the Moon always faces the Earth so for a person standing on the Moon looking up at the sky the Earth does not move across the Moon’s sky but the Earth is always seen (sighted) in the same location in the Moon’s sky where the Earth can be seen rotating one complete rotation every 24 hours.

Allah knows the situation of humans who will travel to the planet Mars.

In space, on the Moon and on Mars it makes sense for people to use their local time combined with the estimated Ramadan new Moon crescent sighting time in Mecca (Makkah), Saudi Arabia.

Humans in Space, humans on the Moon, humans on Mars and humans on the International Space Station can keep the tradition of sighting the Moon part of their Ramadan tradition by making two way radio communications with Mecca (Makkah), Saudi Arabia and other parts of the Earth from Space to ask if the people have sighted or received a confirmed report of a sighting of the crescent of the new Moon.

Radio communications from the International Space Station to the Earth is available using Amateur Radio for friendship communications and this could be used to make two way radio communications with amateur radio stations in Saudi Arabia and other countries who could confirm the sighting of the Moon.

Space travellers are not required to fast because travellers are allowed to do their missed fast days later.
