What is Ashura?
What is Ashurah?
In Sunni Islam it is recommended to fast on two days during the hours of daylight on the 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th days of Muharram to remember and thank God as Prophet Mose Musa and Prophet Muhammad remembered and thanked God during Ashura (the tenth meaning the tenth day of the New Year).
In Shi'a Islam Ashura is a time to mourn the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali (grandson of Prophet Muhammad) on the Day of Ashura (Ashurah).
In the time of Prophet Muhammad the Jews remembered the signs of Prophet Moses Musa on the day of Ashura as a way to praise God on this Day of Atonement (apology and forgiveness) for sin.
Narrated by Ibn 'Abbas (the cousin of Prophet Muhammad):
When the Prophet (Muhammad 1400 years ago on the tenth day of the first month in the Islamic calendar) came to Medina (Yathrib in Arabia today in Saudi Arabia), he found (the Jews) fasting on the day of 'Ashura' (Ashura means tenth, 10th of Muharram, the tenth day of the first month in the Islamic calendar). They (the Jews) used to say: "This is a great day on which God saved (Prophet) Moses Musa and drowned the folk (the people in the Army) of (the) Pharaoh Firon. (Prophet) Moses Musa observed the fast on this day, as a sign of gratitude to God." The Prophet (Muhammad) said, "I am closer to Moses Musa than they (the Jews. Prophet Muhammad said this because both Muhammad and Moses are messengers of God. Prophet Muhammad is saying Prophet Moses, Musa was Muslim meaning Moses, Musa submitted himself to God therefore an event remembered by Jews about a Muslim in the past should certainly also be remembered by Muslims today)." So, he (Prophet Muhammad) observed the fast (on that day) and ordered the Muslims to fast on it. (Reported by Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4 Book 55 Hadith 609. Note that my comments have been added in brackets).
Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims are not enemies because Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims are all Muslims.
Muslims believe in God and all His books such as the Torah Taurat delivered through Prophet Moses Musa and the Gospel Injil delivered through Prophet Jesus Isa and the Koran Quran delivered through Prophet Muhammad.
Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims both believe in God and all His books such as the Torah Taurat delivered through Prophet Moses Musa and the Gospel Injil delivered through Prophet Jesus Isa and the Koran Quran delivered through Prophet Muhammad.
(The fast on the day of Ashura later became optional (not compulsory) when Ramadan became the month of compulsory fast as explained here). Abd al-Rahman reported that he heard Mu'awiya bin Abu Sufyan delivering a sermon in Medina. i.e. when he came there (for Hajj). He delivered a sermon on the day of 'Ashura and said: People of Medina, where are your scholars? I heard (Prophet Muhammad) the Messenger of God say on this very day: It is the day of 'Ashura. God has not made fasting on this day obligatory (compulsory) for you but I (Prophet Muhammad) am fasting (because 1400 years ago no human was closer to Moses Musa than Muhammad since both Moses and Muhammad were the messengers of God. Prophet Muhammad is saying that an event remembered by Jews about a Messenger of God in the past should certainly also be remembered by a new Messenger of God such as Muhammad. When the month of Ramadan fasting was decreed Prophet Muhammad also said the following about fasting on the day of Ashura). He who likes to observe fast among you should do so, and he who likes not to observe it may not observe it. (Prophet Muhammad was the greatest lover of fasting because it brought him closer to God) (Reported by Sahih Muslim, Book 35 Number 2515. Note that my comments have been added in brackets. Also see the similar hadith in Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3 Book 31 Hadith 221).
After the passing of Prophet Muhammad, Sunni Muslims maintained this optional (not compulsory) fast of Ashura.
After the passing of Prophet Muhammad, Shia Muslims made Ashura a day to mourn the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali (grandson of Prophet Muhammad) who died in battle at a time after the passing of Prophet Muhammad.
Sahih Muslim, Book 35, Number 2515 (which is similar to Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3 Book 31 Hadith 221) shows that all Muslims have been granted freedom of choice to observe or not observe fast on the day of Ashura and the only judge is God on the Day of Judgement.
