The facility's power grid serves as the essential electrical network that ensures uninterrupted facility operations. All functions related to the power grid are concentrated in sublevel 2, designated as the Electrical Area. The facility is designed to be powered by two distinct grids: the Primary Grid and the Auxiliary Grid, each deriving power from different sources. Additionally, there is a reserve power source in place, ready to take over in the event that both grids fail.
For the Auxiliary Grid, synchronize the Testbed Fission Reactor or fuel all diesel generators and activate them. Then, make your way to the Primary Electrical room located in SL2 and locate and engage the switch corresponding to the Auxiliary Grid.
For the Primary Grid, activate the DMR and at least one turbine. Then, make your way to the Primary Electrical room and locate and engage the switch corresponding to the Primary Grid.
The External Grid can't be manually activated or deactivated.
The option to switch back to the Auxiliary Grid is available only when the Dark Matter Reactor has entered maintenance mode, power goes out, or when a qualified maintenance personnel has switched the grid. At that point, the diesel generators will automatically start if maintenance mode is activated, and the grid will transition to the Auxiliary power source. if you are coming from a power outage make sure either Fox-9 is synced to grid or refuel and activate the generators and then manually switch grid.
Manual grid switching is typically required when transitioning from the Auxiliary or External Grid to the Primary Grid or during power outages that occur during Dark Matter Reactor downtime, Auxiliary Grid usage, and DMR Stall.
The primary grid draws its power from the Dark Matter Reactor, a remarkable generator that harnesses heat to boil water, spin turbines, and generate electricity. This primary grid is aptly named due to its significance – it serves as the primary power source for both the facility itself and the Connecticut Power Grid. This dual capability is made possible through transformers located in the substation on sublevel 2. Moreover, the primary grid lies at the very core of the Dark Matter Reactor and the overarching purpose of the entire facility.
The auxiliary grid is the designated power source for times when the Dark Matter Reactor (DMR) is temporarily unavailable for any reason, such as during maintenance mode, turbine malfunctions, or when the DMR experiences a combustion stall and requires a restart. Unlike the primary grid, the auxiliary grid offers two reliable power sources: the Project Helios Testbed Fission Reactor and the diesel generators located on sublevel 2. Both of these sources possess the necessary capacity to independently power the auxiliary grid.
To activate the auxiliary grid using the Testbed Fission Reactor, synchronization is required (please refer to Foxtrot-9 Research Division for details). If you opt to utilize the diesel generators, ensure all three generators are adequately fueled with diesel. Diesel supplies can be ordered from the cargo bay and stored in sublevel 2, either on a designated shelf or directly within the cargo bay itself.
In the event that a power outage happens, Maintenance is to connect the Auxiliary grid using either method, before getting confirmation that the DMR isn't in a stall condition and switching to Primary. If the DMR isn't online and the power goes out, you can connect the Project Helios Reactor or refuel the Diesel generators and reconnect the Auxiliary grid, allowing for the DMR to come online.
In cases where neither the primary nor auxiliary grid can be activated, the facility will experience a significant power loss, resulting in the shutdown of various systems. This includes lights, monitors, terminals, sliding doors, garage doors, and elevators. However, it's important to note that the facility is not completely in the dark, as it is still being powered by the External Grid. This External Grid serves as an emergency backup connection sourced from various locations across the state, with power generated through means such as wind turbines and solar panels.
The capability of the External Grid, however, is limited. It can only provide power to essential systems, including maintenance elevators, control mechanisms, and keycard-access doors. All other non-essential systems and devices will remain offline. In addition, the facility is equipped with emergency lights that activate using a battery when the main power source is disconnected. It's worth mentioning that these emergency lights are not intended to last the entire duration of the Nightshift, so preparedness and efficiency during such instances are crucial.
