The Pacific-Continental Network (PaCON) is a USDA-funded initiative focused on building the next generation of skilled professionals in agricultural genomics, plant biosecurity, and plant pathology.
These positions are open to U.S. citizens only, due to the nature of the work involving Select Agents. The program emphasizes research careers that support national food safety and biosecurity. Graduate students are housed in the Department of Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences (PEPS) at UHM CTAHR.
The program also prioritizes professional development, domestic and international networking (e.g., Oregon State University and Australia), and funded travel and internships

Hawaii Pacific Neuroscience Summer Research Internship

Hawaii Pacific Neuroscience offers the largest neuroscience teaching facility in the state of Hawaii. Our mission is to give back, mentor and nurture the future of our Hawaii healthcare leaders. Since 2009, over 295 students have gained valuable experience through our program. The 2020 SIP cohort included 35 students from the high school to the graduate school level. In our 8-week intensive program, interns have the opportunity to interact directly with our multidisciplinary team of doctors and to experience working in a clinic setting. Additionally, interns choose a therapeutic area to research for the duration of their program and present their research in a Summer Symposium at the end of the program.

The fellowship is open to any undergraduate currently enrolled at any of the UH system campuses or at the University of Guam, or currently enrolled at another accredited four-year institution but attended a high school in Hawaiʻi or Guam."
Minority Health Research Training (MHRT) Program in Health Disparities

The MHIRT program at UH is funded through the NIH, National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Out of state sites include Thailand, India, Cameroon, Liberia, American Samoa, and Guam or on Continental United States in Arkansas and Washington State. Students conduct research and receive $1000/month stipend for 3 months in summer; $1900/month for pre-doctoral. Roundtrip airfare and paid living expenses while out of state are covered. Students can earn up to 10 credits of Directed research courses in the Spring and Summer semesters. Undergraduate or graduate students must be US Citizens or Permanent residents and from an under-represented minority group, a socioeconomically disadvantaged background or from rural areas.
