Last year Jayna painted a row of succulents from Koolau Farmers and then forgot to tell anyone about it.
Jayna painted a "carp stone" in a waterfall at the Kinkakuji temple in Japan. It is said that a carp that ascends a waterfall will become a dragon.
Jaymie made DIY Rose Heart's for her mom and grandma as a gift for mother's day. She made it using yarn for the fluffy pom pom's, cardboard and colored paper for the heart, and printable layouts for different types/sizes of roses she found off of pinterest! They loved it!
Jayna painted a pot of orchids (and the weeds) in her backyard.
Michaela also makes short animated clips using a free animation software program called Blender. Here is one showing how to fold an origami paper crane.

ART & SCIENCE
Wouldn't it be cool to have a science themed adventure game or comic book? Michaela sure thinks so!
The small wizard to the left is carrying an antibody - can you tell what type of cell he is based on?
One of Kaile's freehand mandala drawings created during her free time.
This painting of Jayna's favorite local snacks includes: shoyu age arare, gummy pineapples, li hing mui, taro chips, sesame bars, peanut bars, sour watermelons, rainbow bites, imperial mix arare, mixed mochi balls, pineapple chewy candy, dried mango, wasabi peas, li hing sour apple, glitter wrapped candy, sour lychee, nori maki, spicy shredded ika, li hing chewy candy, gummy bears, and a good luck candy lei.
Michaela agrees with Jayna that the weekends are indeed for art!
Here are a few of her favorites including a piece of egg toast, a mountain, and a bacteria galaxy squid (not a real term).
MONA'S FAVORITE QUOTE
“For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again."
- F. Scott Fitzgerald
Note: This probably wasn't written by Fitzgerald, but the internet likes to credit him for it. Noone knows for sure who wrote it.
Last year, Michaela wrote a poem called "The Golden Touch". It is published in the 2020 edition of the Manoa Horizons undergraduate journal and can be viewed through the link below.
The weekdays are for science and the weekends are for art (and also science)! It took 60+ hours over a period of 3 months and was finished on her 23rd birthday.
(2/19/2021) Dordje Balasevic, Yugoslav/Serbian singer-songwriter passed away today due to COVID-19 complications. While Djordje's poetry is difficult to translate into English, I hope his emotions can still transcend.
*Reference to his song "Panonski mornar". Balasevic is from the northern part of Serbia, which lies in the Pannonian Basin, the area that used to be under the Pannonian Sea and now is landlocked.
Music brings us closer; help us travel in space and time - which is especially important now when we cannot go anywhere and sometimes need an escape from the present. This song from Habib Koité, a Malian musician, gifted to the world back in 1995, is one of Sladjana's favorites. Not that she knows any of the lyrics : )
Mali 1995 - ALOHA from Hawaiʻi in 2021!
"Yeah about the test...
The test will measure whether you are an informed, engaged, and productive citizen of the world, and it will take place in schools and bars and hospitals and dorm rooms and in places of worship. You will be tested on first dates, in job interview, while watching football, and while scrolling through your Twitter feed. The test will judge your ability to think about things other than celebrity marriages, whether you'll be easily persuaded by empty political rhetoric, and whether you'll be able to place your life and your community in a broader context. The test will last your entire life, and it will be comprised of the millions of decisions that, when taken together, will make your life yours. And everything, everything, will be on it."

ENDREI'S LAB FUEL
Great music for those long experiments!
Nia Dennis blurred the lines between dance and gymnastics.
A quote taped on our lab door.
Allexa was humming this song during our lab meeting and forgot to mute her microphone : )
