Amateur Radio Emergency Communications (EmComm) fundamentals cover the core knowledge, standard protocols, and structural frameworks ham radio operators use to provide critical public service and disaster relief when normal communication infrastructure fails.

Amateur radio operators are strongly encouraged to obtain emergency communications (EmComm) training. A fundamental understanding of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) coordinated mission with regard to emergency communications will provide you with a solid foundation upon which to build your EmComm knowledge and skills. Key to obtaining a fundamental understanding is satisfactorily completing the Independent Study Program courses IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800.
One of the best ways to obtain EmComm training, gain experience, and improve your EmComm skills is to become a member of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES).
