Light Placement Modal

The Light Placement Modal is available when adding a Light from the Photographer Panel.

LeftMouse click will enter a modal that will create a light on the surface under the mouse. Note that if there is no surface available under the mouse, it will not find where to place it, and will default to the Cursor Location instead.

Ctrl-Click will create the light at the Cursor Location, like the regular Blender Add function.

Alt-Click will create a light with a target, which will enter the more powerful Light Placement Modal documented on this page. Alt+Shift-Click will parent that target to the object that is under the mouse.

Left-Click:  Simple Light Placement Modal

N : Toggle Follow Normals
I : Toggle Invert Light Direction
Mouse Wheel Up and Down :  Adjust Distance

Alt-Click: Light Placement Modal with a Target

Once the light is already created, you can access it  from the Light Properties.

Note that a target is needed for the Placement Modal, and you will need to create a target first to see the icon appear.

The Light Placement Modal allows you to place your light with a target, with helpful modes to rotate around your target using Orbit and Elevation and move the light away or closer to the subject.

You can also adjust other main light settings such as Light Source size, Cone angle, Intensity and Color Temperature.
