Press Release from Harrow and Hillingdon European Movement

Hillingdon voters score huge victory against Brexit

The European Parliamentary election result in Hillingdon is a huge victory for pro-Remain and pro-People's-Vote voters, say local anti-Brexit campaigners.

In total, 55.6% of local voters voted for fully or substantially pro-People's-Vote and pro-Remain parties.

By contrast, the anti-People's-Vote parties – all of which are prepared to countenance a 'no-deal' Brexit - attracted only 42.7% of Hillingdon votes.

The result suggests a huge swing in Hillingdon in favour of remaining in the European Union - and local campaigners are now planning to further expand their campaign to help stop Britain going over the Brexit precipice.

At the referendum in 2016, 43.6% of Hillingdon voters supported Remain. But last week's election results, released on Sunday evening, now show that pro-Remain and pro-People's-Vote support has risen locally by a massive 12 percentage points (50% more than the national average!).

Of equal importance, 75% of the London Region members of the European Parliament (MEPs) elected last Thursday by Hillingdon and other London Region voters are staunchly pro-Remain and pro-People's-Vote.

What's more, despite a national media concentration on Brexit Party successes outside London, the story nationwide is, in fact, a huge pro-Remain pro-People's-Vote victory.

56% of voters nationwide supported fully or substantially pro-People's-Vote and pro-Remain parties, as against 44% who supported anti-People's-Vote parties (all of which are willing to countenance a 'no deal' Brexit).

This is a huge swing to Remain compared with the 2016 referendum result, which was 48% pro-Remain and 52% pro-Brexit.

What's more, 51.4% of the newly elected MEPs across Britain are firmly pro-Remain and pro-People's-Vote, as against just 47.1%, who are firmly anti-People's-Vote and pro-Brexit.

"As the appalling economic and dire political and international security implications of Brexit become increasingly clear, the people of Hillingdon have moved ever more decisively in a Remain direction," said David Keys, Secretary of the Harrow and Hillingdon European Movement, the main non-party-political grassroots organisation campaigning in Hillingdon against Brexit and in favour of a People's Vote.

During the European election campaign, Harrow and Hillingdon European Movement volunteers gave out many thousands of pro-People's-Vote leaflets across Hilllingdon Borough.

"Our local campaign against Brexit will now be further expanded – so anybody who would like to help with leafleting, street stalls, social media, artwork production or in any other way, please get in touch via our email - harrowandhillingdon@europeanmovement.co.uk ," said Mr Keys.

Press Release from Harrow and Hillingdon European Movement

Harrow voters score huge victory against Brexit

The European Parliamentary election result in Harrow is a huge victory for pro-Remain and pro-People's-Vote voters, say local anti-Brexit campaigners.

In total, 62.3% of local voters voted for fully or substantially pro-People's-Vote and pro-Remain parties.

The anti-People's-Vote parties – all of which are prepared to countenance a 'no-deal' Brexit - attracted only 35.8% of Harrow votes.

The result suggests a huge swing in Harrow in favour of remaining in the European Union - and local campaigners are now planning to further expand their campaign to help stop Britain going over the Brexit precipice.

At the referendum in 2016, 54.6% of Harrow voters supported Remain. But last week's election results, released on Sunday evening, now show that pro-Remain and pro-People's-Vote support has risen locally by almost eight percentage points.

Of equal importance, 75% of the London Region members of the European Parliament (MEPs) elected last Thursday by Harrow and other London Region voters are staunchly pro-Remain and pro-People's-Vote.

All you need to do is to change the name of the local authority area, change the statistics and, if necessary, tweak the quotes etc (and, of course, the contact details at the bottom!!).

To get the relevant statistics add up the percentages of the vote, won by all the fully and substantially/partially pro-PV parties - and also add up the percentages of the vote, won by the anti-PV parties (BP, UKIP and the Tories). Look up the Remain percentage in your local authority area at the 2016 referendum – and work out how many percentage points more Remain won on 23 May, 2019. That will give you, very roughly, the swing to Remain. That's all you need to do!
