Where We Are in Place and Time

Unit 4: January 13 - February 21, 2020

Central Idea

The way people live changes depending on time and place.

Lines of Inquiry

  • How weather and geography impact how we live
  • How the way we live now is similar and/or different to how people used to live
  • Similarities and differences of how people around the world (shelter, clothing, food, technology, resources, customs, etc)

Reading

During this unit scholars will be diving into how we are all connected. We are connected through place, time, and feelings. Scholars will be exploring all of the different literal and figurative ways that we are all connected. This literal understanding will help scholars see that people are connected by place, the same planet. This figurative understanding will push scholars to see that even across place and time, people are connected by emotions, thoughts, and feelings. Scholars will start with learning about how we are connected in the literal way through a map by reading Me on the Map. This book will show how where we are currently located expands from a small point to larger. When looking at the larger, we can see connections to others who also can start small by their home to the larger world. Then scholars will see how love and family connects us by reading Ali’s Story. Scholars will read other books that show how emotions and experiences connect us all. Scholars will learn how things change over time as well.

Math

Eureka Module 4- Number Pairs, Addition and Subtraction to 10

In Module 4, number comparison leads to a further study of embedded numbers (e.g., “3 is less than 7” leads to, “3 and 4 make 7,” and 3 + 4 = 7,). “1 more, 2 more, 3 more” lead into addition (+1, +2, +3). Students now represent stories with blocks, drawings, and equations.

Writing

In this unit, scholars will create a maps & directions for new Kindergartners explaining how to find the playground. Their map should include a simple drawing of the selected location along with directions. The directions should be written in logical order and numbered as a way to organize the reader’s steps.

Humanities

This unit in humanities will focus mainly on comparing and contrasting how people live in different places around the world and in different time periods. Scholars will explore different technology from the past and present, as well as the different types of homes people live in today. At the beginning of the unit, the teachers dressed up as a person from another place and time. At the end of the unit, the scholars will dress up as a child who lives in a different time period and explain how their life is similar or different (i.e. clothing, food, shelter).
