How We Express Ourselves

Unit 5: February 24-April 10th, 2020

Central Idea

Experiences shape the way we express ourselves.

Lines of Inquiry

  • How emotions are personal reactions to a situation
  • The use of verbal and nonverbal communication to express thoughts and feelings
  • Positive and negative responses to life experiences
  • How to interpret the emotions of others in order to help us understand them better

Reading

What do I think, feel, believe, and value? How can I express my thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and values in creative ways?

Scholars will explore how people’s beliefs and values are often expressed in the way they present themselves to the world and/or in through creative outlets. This understanding will support scholars in making connections to their own values and beliefs and the ways in which they express them physically and creatively. The books in this unit were chosen to shine a diverse spotlight on the many ways we can express ourselves creatively, despite how others may define “creative”. Further, the book selection in this unit will support discussions around who we are and how that impacts how we express ourselves.

As scholars move through this unit, they will consider how culture and societal norms can impact our creativity. How does our culture or community help to shape our creativity? Are there ways in which it should and should not impact our creativity? Why?

Math

Eureka Module 6- Foundations of Multiplication and Division

In Module 6, students extend their understanding of a unit to build the foundation for multiplication and division wherein any number, not just powers of ten, can be a unit. Making equal groups of “four apples each” establishes the unit “four apples” (or just four) that can then be counted: 1 four, 2 fours, 3 fours, etc. Relating the new unit to the one used to create it lays the foundation for multiplication: 3 groups of 4 apples equal 12 apples (or 3 fours is 12).

Writing

What do I think, feel, believe, and value? How can I express my thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and values in creative ways?

In this unit, scholars will explore the genre of book recommendations as a means of expressing themselves and their thoughts, beliefs, and values. For second graders, book recommendations should include: a strong opinion on a given text, specific details to support the idea, and a connection to the text. A variety of sentence types should be used to make the response interesting and engaging. Scholars should effectively use illustrations which support the text that they are writing their recommendation.

By the end of the unit, scholars will read a book about someone who has made an advancement that impacted the world. Then, they will write a book recommendation for another second grader. Would you recommend this book to someone else in your class? Why or why not? What made you like or dislike the book?

Science

In this unit, scholars will describe the weather outside using adjectives and record the weather over a long period of time to discuss the climate. They will also explore the natural world through observing and describing objects in the sky, such as the appearance of the moon. They will also observe, describe, and compare rocks by size, texture, and color and compare the ways living organisms depend on each other and on their environments for survival.
