How the World Works

Unit 5: February 24-April 10th, 2020

Central Idea

Natural cycles in our world impact how we live.

Lines of Inquiry

  • How cycles change and repeat
  • The impact of cycles on living things

Reading

In this unit, scholars will be diving into the question, “What changes happen in the natural world?” The books for this unit will allow them to explore a variety of changes that happen in the world and why these changes happen. Scholars will be exploring different patterns in the world. This understanding will allow scholars to start to understand the “laws” of nature and how we can see them in our world. Scholars will also explore how natural things can cause the world to change (seasons) as well as how humans can cause natural things to change. This understanding is the foundation for understanding that natural cycles impact how we live.

Math

Eureka Module 5- Identifying, Composing, and Partitioning Shapes

In this module, students think about attributes of shapes and practice composing and decomposing geometric shapes. They also practice work with addition and subtraction within 40 during daily fluency activities (from Module 4). Thus, this module provides important “internalization time” for students between two intense number-based modules. The module placement also gives more spatially-oriented students the opportunity to build their confidence before they return to arithmetic.

Writing

After reading multiple nonfiction texts about the life cycle of a frog, scholars will write an informative writing piece on the life cycle of a frog using the information they gather through the non-fiction books.

Science

In this unit, scholars will learn about the life cycles of plants and animals and cycles in our natural world (i.e. weather). They will learn that parents and their young can sometimes look very similar, but sometimes look different from each other. We can describe these differences as part of a life cycle. Humans and animals both have natural patterns as part of their life cycles.
