Who We Are

Unit 5: February 24-April 10th, 2020

Central Idea

Individuals are influenced by their environment and by the people with whom they interact.

Lines of Inquiry

  • How individuals are shaped through their personal interactions/relationships and environments.
  • Our interactions and how they affect our relationships and environments.

Reading

Scholars will explore their beliefs, values, and histories to create a description of what it means to be human. They will consider what all humans have in common and how we might use this knowledge in our day to day lives. Scholars may want to explore physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual human experiences and the influences those experiences have on us. In The Watsons Go to Birmingham, the protagonist, Kenny, comes of age as concepts of place, time, history, and family collide. Kenny is forced to contend with the trauma of racism and violence and faces doubt about how to reconcile the unthinkable tragedy with his conception of what it means to be human. He relies on the healing power of his family in a time of need and comes to understand his community as an anchor for personal, mental, social, and spiritual health.

Math

Eureka Module 5- Addition and Multiplication with Volume and Area

Frequent use of the area model in Modules 3 and 4 prepares students for an in-depth discussion of area and volume in Module 5. But the module on area and volume also reinforces work done in the fraction module: Now, questions about how the area changes when a rectangle is scaled by a whole or fractional scale factor may be asked and missing fractional sides may be found. Measuring volume once again highlights the unit theme, as a unit cube is chosen to represent a volume unit and used to measure the volume of simple shapes composed out of rectangular prisms.

Science

In this unit, scholars will learn about animal adaptations, heritage traits, and life cycles. Scholars will identify certain adaptations that animals have in order to survive in certain environments. They will design a new animal that has adaptations that help it survive. Scholars will need to be able to say how adaptations shape who we are as living beings.

Scholars will also work as a class to identify and collect data on inherited and learned traits. They will then, apply this to the animal kingdom. Both of these explorations will help scholars inquire and learn about what makes them who they are.

Writing

Scholars will be working on their Exhibition project in this unit. They will choose a topic that is important to them to research, create a presentation to share their learnings, and write an essay on their topic.

5th Grade Scholar Exhibition will take place at Peak Primary on May 20th, 2020. Scholars will share their learnings with the school community and parents.

For more information, visit our Exhibition website (coming soon).
