This is a research-based and structured Tier 2 intervention that pairs students together to help with each other’s academic skills. The way that this works is that the student who has mastered the skill or lesson is the tutor for the student who needs more help, which helps to create a healthy and collaborative learning environment. This is a good way for students that don’t need intensive individualized help to get help from a peer. Research has shown that peer tutoring is an effective way for students to improve their grades and academic outcomes. In fact, 88% of studies have shown positive results on peer tutoring. Peer tutoring is good for other things than just improving a student’s grade. It can help improve motivation, social skills, and helps to encourage positive relationships between students and allow them to hold each other accountable. The dynamic of the peer/ tutor relationship is that the tutor helps their peer with specific tasks, gives explanations, and gives the tutor the ability to get immediate feedback. By having a peer be the tutor, it helps reinforce learning for both students and helps to promote academic growth and social skills between students. This strategy can be used with students grades 2-8 who need additional academic support in subjects such as English and Math. In a peer-to-peer tutoring situation, two students are paired together to work on specific tasks. If they were doing math problems, the tutor would guide the other student through the problem-solving strategies and provide feedback and explanations. This helps both students understand the material more.
