Back to School Edition- Welcome to a Positive Year Ahead!
What Is PBIS?
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a school-wide approach to creating a positive, safe, and productive learning environment. At Next Gen Middle School, we focus on teaching, modeling, and recognizing positive behaviors so that every student can thrive—both socially and academically.
PBIS helps our school build a culture where expectations are clear, behaviors are reinforced consistently, and students are supported with compassion and structure.
Why We Use PBIS:
It creates a more predictable and respectful environment for all students.
It helps reduce disruptions and increase learning time.
It supports positive relationships between students, teachers, and families.
PBIS is data-driven, so we can adjust strategies based on what’s working.
Tips for Parents & Caregivers
Use the same language – Talk about being safe, respectful, and responsible at home just like we do at school.
Recognize positive behavior – Catch your child doing something great and praise them specifically!
Create a home routine – Consistency and structure help children feel secure.
Ask PBIS questions – Such as: “What expectations did you meet today?” or “How did you show respect today?”
Celebrate progress – Even small progress deserves a high five, a hug, or extra free time.
PBIS Terms You Should Know:
ODRs (Office Discipline Referrals)- Formal reports that staff submit to school administration when a student's behavior violates school rules and need administrative intervention.
High Frequency Acknowledgement- A small item such as a ticket, token, or sticker that is given when a student meets a specific behavioral expectation.
Problem Analysis- When educators gather information needed to answer the five Ws and one H. These questions are: What is the problem? When is it occurring? Where is it occurring? Who is engaged in the behavior? Why is it occurring? and How often is the behavior occurring?
In each newsletter, we’ll highlight students, families, and staff who are modeling our PBIS values.
