The check in/check out program is a behavioral intervention designed for Tier 2 that is designed to help students that have disruptive behaviors. In this program, the student is supposed to check in with a designated teacher or staff member at their school at the beginning of each class or school day. During the day, the student will be getting continuous feedback from teachers that are rating the student’s behavior based on the goals that they have set in their Daily Progress Report (DPR). At the end of the school day, the student will meet back with their teacher to check out, go over the progress that they have made for the day, and get either positive reinforcement or be reprimanded based on their performance for the day.
The check in/ check out method is designed to help increase student responsibility for their own behavior, allow teachers to provide students that are having behavioral issues with consistent feedback, and to overall improve the child’s behavior. Research has found that the check in/check out system can effectively reduce a student’s disruptive behavior by 65-75%. This program is relatively easy to implement and adapt to in schools, which makes it a practical and sustainable program to insert into a school. This program is more for students that need behavioral help, but don’t need intensive intervention and it has been found to be especially effective in elementary and middle school or grades K-8.
