This week Mya sat down with Peris to discuss her experiences as a Ugandan, navigating American race relations she was unfamiliar with. She discussed her perception of how race and racism impacts American society as a whole and in particular academia. Peris also spoke about the legacy and traumas of colonialism in African nations and its impact on current tribal tensions. She shared her experiences on Skidmore’s campus as a Black International student and the tokenism that she often feels in classroom settings. Peris and Mya also discussed the difficulties in bridging the gap between the growth and experiences she has had in American with her family and community at home in Uganda and her determination to preserve her identity as both an American and a Ugandan.
