Intro
Born in Barcelona, Spain, Alexia Putellas joined her first club at age 7 and now looks to lead her team to international dominance in the 2024 Olympics after they took the 2023 World Cup. She won the Best FIFA Women's Player award in both the 20-21 and 21-22 seasons and is the only player to win the prize for two consecutive years. She is known for her ball placement and passing range, allowing her to dictate the tempo of games. She has won all major club and individual awards possible for a European player and is seen as one of the best female players of all time. She speaks frequently about the equalization of men's and women's football: she told Spanish radio program El Larguero, “When I only talk about football in an interview, women’s football will have been normalized.”
International career
Putellas is one of just three players to achieve 100 caps for the Spanish women's team, along with Jennifer Hermoso and team vice-captain Irene Paredes. She played for the Spanish youth teams from age 15 to 19 during their golden age, helping Spain take third in the 2010 U-17 Women's World Cup and sweeping the U-17 Women's Championship the same year. Putelllas started off her senior career in 2013 by scoring the game-winning goal in her first competitive match, which gave Spain their first win in a Euro tournament in 16 years. She helped take Spain to the Round of 16 in the 2019 World Cup, which was their best World Cup performance yet. In 2021, she was named Spain's Player of the Year, and was set to captain the team in 2022, but an ACL injury took her out of play for the year. Throughout 2022, Putellas vocally supported Las 15, a group of her teammates who refused to play for Spain until the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) addressed concerns over poor mental and physical health on the team. Putellas was still recovering in the 2023 World Cup and played a more auxilary role in Spain's victory; she was also blacklisted from captaining the team due to her support for Las 15. When RFEF was restructured, her teammates voted her into the captaincy again.
Club career
Putellas began her club career on the Barcelona youth team in 2005, but when the club was restructured she had to move to Espanyol to stay in her age group. She played there until 2011, when she moved to Levante in Valencia for a year. There she finished as the club's top scorer at just 17 years old. Barcelona approached her after her incredible season at Levante. Putellas grew up attending Barcelona games and idolizing players like Andres Iniesta and Rivaldo, so she joined Barcelona herself in 2012 and never looked back. Her deep loyalty to her club has paid off, as she has captained the team since 2017 and holds the title of their all-time leading goal scorer.
-Putellas after the Luis Rubialdes scandal. Putellas was extremely vocal after RFEF president Luis Rubialdes forcibly kissed Spain player Jenni Hermoso after Spain's 2023 World Cup Finals win. Rubialdes ultimately resigned as president.
