Although she was born in Los Angeles, CA, she is able to play for the New Zealand National Team due to her dad's dual citizenship. Riley attended Stanford University on a Division 1 scholarship where she played from 2006 to 2009. Although she was recruited and played as a forward at Stanford, in her junior year she switched to defensive positions and has played as a defender ever since then. In 2011, she signed for Western New York Flash and since then has played for LdB FC Malmö in Sweden, Chealsea (in the Women's Super League), FC Bayern Munich in Germany, Orlando Pride in Florida, FC Rosengård in Sweden, and returned back to her roots in Angel City FC in Los Angeles. Her extensive soccer background will enable her to lead the team with confidence and skill in the upcoming Olympic games.

"Soccer needs you, and you need it. Not for wins or awards or money, but because it will teach you about teamwork, leadership, and sacrifice. Soccer will shape you into the person you’re meant to be." Riley writing a note to her younger self

International career

Riley has participated in the last four Olympic games, therefore, making this Olympics her fifth appearance. She has played in five FIFA Women's World Cups. Although she made her debut on the 2006 U-20 New Zealand National Team, she has not slowed in her style of play.  She is an aggressive and learned leader who will definitely be a leader in the upcoming 2024 Olympics for New Zealand.
