Pacific University & La Macina

An international partnership in Tuscany that offers Pacific University students

the opportunity to develop their art in a thriving arts community.

La Macina di San Cresci is an artistic hub where artists learn about Italian culture, build connections, and exchange ideas from around the world.

My name is Jodelle (she/her). I graduated from Pacific University in 2021 with a major in Creative Writing.  Right now my artistic work is primarily in travel writing and poetry.

I first came to Italy on a Pacific University internship under the guidance of my professor Kathlene Postma.  My challenge was to use my writing and editing skills to expand social media for La Macina di San Cresci, an international artists residency program in Tuscany.

This opportunity was so productive that I was invited by the La Macina directors to return this fall to serve as their Director of Marketing!

Part of my mission now is to work collaboratively with Mimma Verduci and Duccio Trassinelli, the directors of La Macina, and Professor Postma to make it possible for more Pacific University students to have the opportunity to write and learn at La Macina.

My position includes time to work on my own travel writing and poetry.

Translating professional and historical documents.  La Macina di San Cresci is an 1100-year-old church and adjoining villa.  Some of my work involves documenting its history and fundraising on its behalf.

I also curate the social media and promote La Macina's outreach to international artists.

I'm living la dolce vita while studying Italian in Florence and taking part in the local community, including helping with the grape and olive harvests.

La Macina artists live and create onsite. Everyone has their own private space as well as shared common areas to encourage collaboration and cultural exchange.

La Macina has welcomed hundreds of artists from around the world. Read about a few of the international resident artists at La Macina who I have gotten to work with.

(There is an extensive and exciting list. I will continue adding artists!)

Located in the heart of wine country, are endless activities.  We make day trips to nearby towns and visit Florence for big art events.

In May 2023:  Professor Kathlene Postma will bring Travel Writing students from Pacific University to study at La Macina and other locations in Tuscany.
