Local Events

La Raccolta Delle Olive

23-30 October, 2022

The olive harvest, or la raccolta delle olive, is the pinacol of October in Toscana. Families spend weeks handpicking olives, which are then pressed into oil or preserved for eating. I will help the Coriani family with their harvest!

La Vendemmia

17 September, 2022

The other most important event is the grape harvest, called la vendemmia. It takes place every September. I was invited by a neighbor to help with the harvest and lunch with the family. By the end of the day, I felt like a part of the family.

50th Annual Expo del Chianti Classico

9-12 September, 2022

Wine festival time!

wines from around chianti and celebrate the harvest.

Organic Market

4th Sunday of the Month

Instead of buying souvenirs at tourist shops, I befriend a local artisan and purchase one-of-a-kind items. Organic produce, soap, oil, wine, naturally died textiles, wood crafts, and ceramics.

Weekly Textile Market

Every Saturday 9 am - 1 pm

My advice is to arrive with an empty suitcase and rebuild your wardrobe with lightweight Italian linen clothes.

It's fun to shop alongside and spark up conversations with local people.

Day Trips from La Macina

Florence (Firenze)

Florence is only a one-hour bus ride away.

I visit multiple times per week to attend language classes, tour museums, and explore the city.

Living nearby means that I can enjoy the history slowly and veer off of the beaten path.

Siena

La Macina is located halfway between Florence and Siena.

Siena is famous for its break-neck horse race around the Piazza dell Campo, the town square.

Lucca Biennale Cartasia

19 September, 2022

The artsy town of Lucca is only a couple of hours away from La Macina.

I organized a day trip for myself and two artists to visit the paper statues on display throughout the city.

We toured a museum on Italian immigration to the U.S. and gawked at the 8th-century church of San Davino Armeno.
