The marine acoustic environment is important for all types of marine ecotypes, including the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales who use echolocation to hunt for their food as well as calls, clicks, whistles to communicate with one another. Man-made noises such as military testing of sonar and ships severely affect the marine acoustic environment and is damaging to the Southern Residents.
The Shipnoise project exists to attenuate man-made noises from ships to ensure that the Southern Residents are not adversely affected. Data, both archival and live, could be used to alert ships that Southern Residents or other whale ecotypes are in the vicinity.
Research on those involved in the alerting of ship noises is needed- from those providing data that orcas are in the area, to port authorities, to ship captains and recreational boat operators need to be done to understand the problem space and how messages can originate and be sent to request that noise attenuating action be taken.
