Orcahome is the name for the main Orcasound website found at orcasound.net. It is a content-oriented website that provides education on marine conservation issues, ways to get involved as a volunteer with Orcasound, access to the listening web-app, as well as ways to connect and donate to orgs within our network.
For many first-time visitors, Orcahome is their first interaction with Orcasound. Orcahome is also the “hub” of the entire Orcasound experience, as future web-apps will be introduced on the main website. Understanding the user’s mental model of the ideal site map is critical for allowing visitors to discover all that Orcasound offers. Having well-written copy that clearly communicates the objectives of web page is also important. Information architecture that incorporates content strategy methodologies and approaches are key to providing a user experience that meets user needs and fulfills Orcasound’s mission of marine conservation.
In the past, we redesigned the entirety of Orcahome in a “versioning” approach. Moving forward, we are taking an Agile approach, iterating on single web pages or even chunks of content on web pages. Running usability and IA studies is key to understanding how to build Orcahome that is user centric. Understanding user analytics is also key to understanding how to continually improve the website.
