“Still Waters Run Deep” by Barbara Chen
How quickly days passed when my boat ebbed and flowed
Like a metronome over ocean waves;
When rainbows appeared after every tempest;
When I docked in safe harbors
And set sail on headings north by northwest towards endless horizons
With the wind at my back and dolphins in my slipstream.
How many unexplored distant lands were yet to come.
But, oh – how unexpectedly waters which once glistened like diamonds
Transitioned to pitch black.
The moon now no longer rises, the sun no longer sets.
Even my faithful compass rose has all but faded,
And dense fog surrounds my every day.
Here I lay adrift,
In still waters that run deep…..
