“CELESTIAL ROAD” by Dylan Griffith
The arc of the bird
aloft along skies of gray
weaves through wispy cauliflower
painting the stratosphere
blinding the perimeter of earth’s container
planting seeds
where we think roots cannot grow
where we know we cannot sink
where space may bring mercy
though mercy shall not transform
the species that claims roots
cannot sprawl thoughtful tentacles
in colorful soil
painting the celestial road
above what we call “ground”
*poem inspired by the song Celestial Road by Sun Ra & His Arkestra
“OUR UNDERWATER FRIENDS” by Dylan Griffith
Today I wept at the ocean
while passing her
in my car on highway 101
& soon after
highway patrol flew by
speeding toward an exit
to collect someone else’s tears–
but the ocean,
void of our kind
yet full of itself,
& its water
struck me delicate & undeniable
at the peak of my imagination
& whispered:
winter's frigid wetness
preserves the vacations
of our underwater friends
