This section will cover things to bring, and some things to know before hand.
OCS is located in Quantico, VA. It is aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, which is split into "Mainside" and "Camp Barrett." You'll be on Mainside. Mainside is smaller in area, closer to the water. Mainside has the main offices of MCBQ, and Camp Barrett is really just TBS and associated supporting companies. Mainside also has OCS, and the rest of the base where most of the people stationed there live and work. It also has a little town, "Q-town" with a train station. When people visit MCBQ, they visit Mainside.
Your OSO will give you instructions on getting there. I think most people fly there and get the shuttle. Other people bring their cars because they live closer. Having a car is definitely handy. You can store a lot of your stuff in there, and you'll have it on liberty.
I neither flew or drove my car...I ATTEMPTED to drive my car but...
My car was on its last legs and my mechanic told me not to spend anymore money on it so I drove with the check engine light on for three months. On the way to OCS, I wisely asked my dad for a ride. I lived in Philly and my dad lived just outside the city limits. On the way to my dad's, my check engine light started flashing, and my car was hating me. I ended up leaving it in a ditch somewhere because the engine gave out. My dad took care of my car for me later. Love you dad.
If you bring your car, it has to be NOTHING like mine. Before liberty, you'll do vehicle inspections. Your car will get checked for working lights, brakes, wipers, etc. There's no category for working engine but you really don't want to pull a Candidate Hart and end up stranded somewhere....
