For This Week...
First week intro and bio*
Harris Mahmood is the instructor for this course, he is a Hāfidh of the Qur’ān and holds Ijāzāt (traditional teaching licenses) in multiple Riwāyāt (styles of recitation) of the Qur’ān with 29 teachers between the Prophet ﷺ and him as well as Ijāzāt in various Mutūn (traditional texts) of the Islamic sciences. In this course we seek to provide students with the opportunity to not only develop their ability to recite the Qur’ān, but also to allow them to grow their connection with the Qur’ān and in turn with Allāh. In this course students will further develop from being at a sufficient or near-sufficient level in their Qur’ān recitation to getting closer to the level of proficiency. This will be done so by fine-tuning the Sifāt (specific properties of letters), Waqf and Ibtidā’ (starting and stopping), as well as other factors that create a skilled reciter of the Qur’ān.
What was covered today:*
In today’s class, the instructor assessed the students in a class recitation circle in order to evaluate the level that each student is at for the purpose of planning the weeks to come. After assessing each student’s current skill level, the instructor delivered a short lecture on the importance of learning the Qur’ān and seeking knowledge related to it. This brief lecture was followed by a longer discussion-based lesson of the importance of recitation of the Qur’ān.
Homework for next week:*
Over this week, students are expected to listen to multiple reciters of their choice for at least 30 minutes while following along in the text. During this process students are meant to take note of specific aspects that differentiate these different reciters.
What will be covered next week:*
Next week students will begin practically delving into the recitation of the Qur’ān in order to work towards a level of fluidity in recitation.
