How do we define Refunctioning and Re-recognising?

Re‑function: changing what something does

Re‑functioning means assigning a new function to an existing object—often one it was not originally designed for.

Key idea

The object stays materially the same, but its purpose changes.

Re‑recognise: changing how something is seen or valued

Re‑recognising is more conceptual. It means rethinking the meaning, status, or cultural value of something.

Key idea

The function may stay the same—or disappear—but the interpretation changes.
