Illinois Break & Meal Guidelines
Illinois requires meal periods for longer shifts but does not mandate rest breaks. Newbridge ensures compliance with these requirements while applying internal standards for consistent break scheduling and staff performance.
For shifts worked in Illinois:
A 20-minute meal is required for shifts of 7.5 hours or more
There is no state requirement for paid rest breaks
Newbridge Standard:
All breaks and meals are paid. Scheduling must meet Illinois’ meal requirement first. Additional rest breaks are applied using Newbridge standards to ensure staff are properly rested and not overworked.
General Guidelines (Applied Alongside State Law):
4 hours or less → No break
4.5 to 5.5 hours → 1 paid 15-minute break
6 to 6.5 hours → 2 paid 15-minute breaks + 1 paid 30-minute meal
6.5 to 7.5 hours → 1 paid 15-minute break + 1 paid 30-minute meal
7.5+ hours → 2 paid 15-minute breaks + 1 paid 30-minute meal (meets IL meal requirement)
