Hawaii Break & Meal Guidelines
Hawaii requires meal periods for longer shifts but does not mandate rest breaks. Newbridge ensures compliance while applying internal standards for consistent break scheduling.
For shifts worked in Hawaii:
A 30-minute meal is required for shifts of 5 consecutive hours or more
There is no state requirement for paid rest breaks
Newbridge Standard:
All breaks and meals are paid. Scheduling must meet Hawaii’s meal requirement first. Additional rest breaks are applied using Newbridge standards to support staff wellbeing and performance.
General Guidelines (Applied Alongside State Law):
4 hours or less → No break
4.5 to 5 hours → 1 paid 15-minute break
5 to 6.5 hours →
1 paid 30-minute meal + 1 paid 15-minute break
6.5 to 7.5 hours →
1 paid 30-minute meal + 1 paid 15-minute break
8+ hours →
2 paid 15-minute breaks + 1 paid 30-minute meal
Breaks are scheduled evenly throughout the shift and should not be taken within the first or last hour.
