The tonatarma is the official script of the Naucan language, created by the Order—a council of mystical advisors—and formally adopted by the lords. Designed as a clear, logical writing system, it assigns one symbol per sound and is used today for education, administration, and literature.
Two distinct styles of the tonatarma developed over time. The Square Tonatarma, the older form, was designed for carving into wood and stone using tools such as chisels, blades, and fire-hardened points. It features straight lines and angular shapes for easy inscription. Later, with the spread of ink and parchment, a Rounded Tonatarma emerged. This style allowed for smoother, faster handwriting and became widespread as the script moved from urban centers to rural communities.
