Inclusive Language

Inclusive language involves different considerations depending on the language and context. In Arabic, these choices require particular care and adaptation to real‑world usage, audience expectations and the purpose of the text.

I offer support in the use of inclusive language to ensure communication reflects diverse identities and is appropriate for different audiences and contexts. A key part of my work focuses on gender‑inclusive language practices, particularly making feminine forms visible and avoiding the systematic use of masculine generics. Where the grammar allows, neutral constructions may also be used, while remaining consistent with established linguistic norms.

I also work with LGBTQIA+‑related terminology when appropriate. Given the cultural, social and legal realities of Arabic‑speaking contexts, inclusive language choices are always assessed on a case‑by‑case basis, taking into account the purpose of the text, its audience and how it will be used.

My approach to inclusive language is guided by the audience and intended purpose of each text, focusing on how language is actually used and received in its specific context. Through inclusive language consultancy, I offer practical guidance to help navigate these choices thoughtfully and responsibly, identifying suitable linguistic options and assessing their relevance for the target audience and context. The aim is to ensure that inclusivity is integrated in a way that remains clear, respectful and workable in real‑world use.
