Alexandre François DEBAIN: 1809-1877

Apprenti ébéniste jusqu'en 1825, il commence l'année suivante son apprentissage dans la facture de piano, domaine où il deviendra contremaître.

Parti en Angleterre en 1830, il démontre un grand talent pour l'invention et la réalisation de machines complexes. 

De retour à Paris en 1834, il devient facteur de pianos. Il fait faillite deux ans plus tard, puis, ayant épongé ses dettes, il se réinstalle en 1836. Il dépose alors de nombreux brevets, dont le plus mémorable est celui de l'harmonium, en 1842.

En 1844, Debain remporte une médaille de bronze à l’exposition nationale de Paris pour ses harmoniums désormais parvenus à un point de relative perfection avec l’expression, le sommier à cases et son ouverture par charnières, les demi-registres coupés et les larges pédales. Cette période relativement faste s’achève le 21 mai 1846 par le décès de son épouse Jeanne Charlotte Célestine.

Le 11 février 1860, Alexandre François est fait chevalier de la légion d’Honneur.

A l’exposition universelle de 1867, Debain est appelé pour faire partie du jury, il est donc placé Hors Concours.

Apprentice cabinetmaker until 1825, he began his apprenticeship the following year in piano making, a field where he became foreman.

Having left for England in 1830, he demonstrated a great talent for inventing and creating complex machines.

Back in Paris in 1834, he became a piano maker. He went bankrupt two years later, then, having paid off his debts, he settled down again in 1836. He then filed numerous patents, the most memorable of which was that of the harmonium, in 1842.

In 1844, Debain won a bronze medal at the National Exhibition in Paris for his harmoniums, which had now reached a point of relative perfection with their expression, the box spring and its opening by hinges, the cut half-registers and the wide pedals. This relatively prosperous period ended on May 21, 1846 with the death of his wife Jeanne Charlotte Célestine.

On February 11, 1860, Alexandre François was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor.

At the Universal Exhibition of 1867, Debain was called to be part of the jury, so he was placed Hors Concours.
