"Description of Project (include details about the scope, form, and length of the project, including plans for assessment)"
A series of tutorial videos covering the usage of nanDECK to rapidly prototype card designs for testing, and to produce finalized, production ready assets that can be used in a finished game.
Deliverables: The series will be composed of 3-5 videos with a length of 10-15 minutes
1. The first video will be a brief overview of nanDECK, what it is best used for, what a user should know, and then jump right into how to make a prototype card. By the end of the first video, a viewer should be able to follow along and complete a deck of simple prototype cards for their game.
2. The second video should discuss in more detail various features of nanDECK, including the most up to date process for linking a Google Sheet instead of an excel sheet on the local disc. (This process has changed a few times, and many of the resources that currently exist to describe how to do this no longer work.) This video should function as an 'intermediate' lesson in nanDECK.
3. The third video should be an 'advanced' lesson which discusses some of the finer points of using nanDECK like exactly what the code created by the visual editor does, and how to edit that code to achieve a finer, more precise result. By the end of this video, a viewer should be able to produce a 'final build' of their card deck, which looks much nicer than the earlier prototype.
4-5. Because there is a lot of material to cover in nanDECK, I'd like to leave myself the option of 1 or 2 extra videos to discuss various things. nanDECK uses code to build cards, and having more time to explain nanDECK's unique syntax, and basic coding principles could help a lot to make the tutorial series more comprehensive and useful to viewers.
The Game Design honors project explores how interactive media and games are being used by zoos and related institutions to interact with the public. The student will explore the decision-making for examples, such as why the game was created and how it was developed. Additionally, board games with zoological and/or conservational themes will be described and discussed.
The student will create a 3-to-6-minute video detailing the findings. One game will be created with zoology and/or conservation themes. The proposed game aims to find innovative ways to express current zoological research in board games to an audience of high school students while integrating Next Generation Science Standards. There will be a guide for High School teachers to integrate this game into their science curriculum.
Paper or video to show benchmarking and how zoos promote conservation using entertainment.
Potential benchmarks could include, Toronto Zoo AR experience, Seneca Park Zoo Linticular ASL experience, perhaps create the theme around a species species survival plan topic.
The personal game would be an example of what is missing in the concepts of the existing games.
