E. ROSSANESE, Why We Need Some Form of Ontological Pluralism

June, 4, 2021, h. 16-18 CET

The aim of this talk is to defend the idea that, in the search for the ontology of our physical theories, we should adopt a certain form of ontological pluralism. If we accept the neo-positivistic critiques to metaphysics and the idea that the ontology is always theory-dependent, we need to accept also the possibility of having several ontologies for different physical theories. I will discuss Carnap's original analysis and critique of metaphysics. I will introduce his theory of linguistic frameworks. I will then move forward to a generalization of Carnap's analysis with respect to the contemporary debate. I will finally suggest to adopt a form of ontological pluralism in order to interpret our physical theories.
