The Clayesmore Lexicon

Research tells us that one of the best ways to help students to develop their academic discourse is to improve their vocabulary.

The academic, Averil Coxhead, has generated a list of the most commonly used words in academic writing. It's called the 'Academic Word List' and it contains about 500 words.

We want to help all our students to learn these words. Each week, a list of 5 words is published to students, tutors and to parents. Students are encouraged to learn the words and then to self-test themselves online during the week. Each week's test assesses how well they know those 5 words as well as a selection of words from previous weeks.
