RACES Strategy

(Burnett, 2019)
This strategy can be used to assist with answering comprehension (i.e., WH questions) questions about a text using written expression.
When given reading comprehension questions to answer, students with learning disabilities sometimes answer in either one word or a short phrase. In order to help students respond on topic using complete sentences, it is important to introduce the RACES writing strategy. This strategy encourages students to include supporting details and examples.
Read and Restate the question or prompt (reword the question and make it into a statement).
Answer the question that is being asked (make sure to answer all parts of the question).
Cite the source (use text evidence and provide examples and/or details to support your answer). This may include quotes.
Elaborate on your response and explain any quotes or evidence you selected.
Sum it up. Link your conclusion to your topic sentence, but use different words.
During center activities, the educator can attach the RACES strategy to the front cover of their center work folders. This visual prompt can serve as a resource for the students as they are transitioning between centers to answer questions about a text (i.e., non-fiction, fiction). Eventually, this prompt can be faded and the acronym RACES can be posted. Moreover, verbal reminders can be given.
