The purpose of the SQ3R strategy is to encourage active engaged readers.
SQ3R is an active reading strategy that reminds students to underline and highlight key information, analyze text features, and take notes. This strategy is important for students to use because it helps them delve into the text, generate questions, and ultimately, deepens their understanding of the content.
Survey the chapter or page (i.e., text features, introduction, conclusion). To survey means to scan or skim the text.
Turn the title, headings, and subheadings into questions and begin brainstorming possible answers.
Read and reread carefully if necessary to locate possible answers to your questions.
Look, read, and write notes about what you have read, including key information from the text. Here, you may choose to highlight and underline key details.
Write questions in the margins for the information you have highlighted or underlined.
To promote generalization, the teacher should explicitly teach each step of the strategy in isolation and provide prompting as needed (i.e., verbal, gestural, visual). While modeling, describing, and demonstrating each step, the teacher can have the SQ3R strategy posted in the classroom and refer to it continuously throughout the activity. The direct concise language used in the visual may help students apply the skill to both fiction and non-fiction texts.
