Students with SLD have difficulty self-monitoring and self-regulating their emotions and behaviors. In addition, students tend to have trouble understanding classroom rules, expectations, and consequences. Individuals with SLD may also display impulsive behaviors not only academically, but also socially and behaviorally. For this, it is important to use direct explicit instruction to teach cognitive and metacognitive strategies. This approach can be used to model appropriate behaviors. With these tools, students’ self-awareness skills, organizational skills, and goal setting skills will increase. Apart from this, students will be able to see how their actions affect others, as well as themselves.
