Individuals with SLD tend to have difficulty recalling pertinent details from a text. Using graphic organizers can help students self-monitor their comprehension before, during, and after reading. Moreover, these students generally need assistance with locating the main idea and supporting details of different texts (i.e., fiction, nonfiction). Furthermore, when asked to summarize a text, often times, students are only able to retrieve a small amount of information, which greatly impacts their overall comprehension. To assist students with finding key points, students can be instructed on how to use text features (i.e., bold print, headings, diagrams, captions, etc.). The strategies below will help students make explicit connections between what they have previously learned (i.e., background knowledge) and what they will learn as a result of a lesson. In addition, the strategies will help students examine word parts and use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.
